Switching over exhibitions is always a big task, but this time our team opted for TURBO TURNOVER!
Between each exhibition, the gallery is closed for one weekend. During that time normal operations include taking down, packing, and returning/shipping artwork; removing hardware; patching and painting the walls; organizing and retouching pedestals; installation of the entire next exhibit; and preparing for the opening reception. It’s a lot of work, even with two weeks of time.
This time we turned it up a few notches! The last exhibition ended on Sunday, March 24th- and we got straight to work. From Sunday night to Monday morning, we removed and packed all the artwork. On Monday we did a complete paint refresh of ALL gallery walls. By Tuesday morning all artworks were on their way home. We also polished the copper fireplace- which took two people an hour to complete.
Starting on Tuesday morning, a staff member from the Parks and Recreation department began the long process of refinishing our gallery floor. With the need to stay off the floor, we channeled our energy into spring cleaning and organizing our garage! Today (Wednesday, March 27th) we will finish the floor and our garage clean up.
Oh, and did we mention that Mandy, our Youth Education Director also pulled off three field trips and two classroom visits in the last three days? It has certainly been a whirlwind of a week so far. A huge thank you to Mike for working on our floors and to our lovely volunteers who stepped up to lend a hand throughout this process!
Next week, artist Jyoti Duwadi and curator Barbara Matilsky will install the next exhibition with the help of staff. We hope you’ll join us for the opening reception of Reimagining the Intersection of Art & Environment- Exploring Natural & Repurposed Materials on Friday, April 5th from 5-7pm. The reception is free to attend and food will be available for purchase from Pacific Pantry.
You can also get an in-depth look into the exhibit at Coffee & Conversation on Saturday, April 6th from 10am-12pm. Enjoy an intimate look at the inspiration and processes behind the artwork from the artist and curator while enjoying coffee and pastries. Pastries provided by Buena Luz.
