Our youth programming sometimes falls under the radar…unless you’re a student participant or parent, you might not know all of the things happening behind the scenes. Read on below for updates on our Youth Art Education programming. SPOILER- Mandy has been working REALLY hard!
Field Trips
For educators looking to complement their classroom learning, the PAFAC offers Field Trips to the gallery and sculpture park- absolutely free! Students can learn about a range of topics- the history of Port Angeles, Architecture, Ecology, Stewardship, Team Building and more. Teachers are invited to schedule field trips based on themes related to the current exhibition in the gallery or contact staff to help create an experience based on their curriculum. So far in 2024 we’ve hosted 11 field trips!

Mondrian Lesson
A few weeks ago, the PAFAC joined local abstract artist Terry Anderson for a lesson on Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. This particular classroom lesson was made possible with a grant by the Port Angeles Education Foundation to bring arts into local classrooms. Check out what the first graders at Franklin Elementary created:
Youth Art Education Auction Results
From May 21st – May 26th, we ran an online auction with artworks from “Reimagining the Intersection of Art & Environment”. Artist Jyoti Duwadi donated the pieces to the auction, donating 100% of the proceeds to our Youth Arts Education programming. We are extremely grateful to Jyoti and to all our bidders for their generosity and support.
Creative Start & Blooming Artists exhibit
The Port Angeles Fine Arts Center works with the Port Angeles School District and local schools to offer arts integrated education through the Creative Start Grant from the Washington State Arts Commission. During the 2023- 2024 school year, PAFAC staff have worked with 14 teachers from 3 schools across the district to offer 47 classes!
Each year of learning culminates in the “Blooming Artists” exhibition, where students get the opportunity to see their artwork on display in the Esther Webster Gallery. “Blooming Artists” will be on display from June 4th- June 30th, 2024.
All are welcome to join us for the opening reception on Tuesday, June 4th from 3pm-6pm. We’ll have snacks and activities to help celebrate the student artists.
Summer Nature Art Camps
Each summer the Fine Arts Center offers two weeks of art, nature, exploration, and outdoor fun through four different half day sessions for ages 7-12. The unique setting of Webster’s Woods, five acres of wooded trails and sculpture park, provides an exciting backdrop for integrating art, STEAM principles, nature exploration and outdoor fun. The camps use principles of outdoor education to encourage inquiry, build students’ curiosity and creatively apply science learning principles while teaching art concepts and skills. While each camp session focuses on a different theme, all programs include outdoor adventure, nature education, art, and collaborative problem-solving. With all these elements, students play, learn, and build their creativity at the same time.
Camp offerings for 2024 include Nature Art and Creative Design: Mosaics from August 19th-23rd and Design, Create, Animate! and Creative Engineering: Kinetic Sculpture from August 26th-30th. Camps are $130 for PAFAC members and $150 for non-members.
