Join us on a visual journey as we explore the artistry evoked from the renewal of the Elwha River. Through the eyes of artists who have come alongside researchers, engineers, tribal members and advocates over the last 10 years in the process of dam removal and restoration, we see the beauty, resilience and sublime power of this river ecosystem. Their artwork celebrates the spirit of collaboration and perseverance that made this restoration possible.

As we celebrate the beauty and resilience of the river over the last 10 years, we also acknowledge that these past 10 years are but a mere dot on the landscape of time and that the true story of the river lies within the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe. The S’kallam/ Kallam people have lived alongside the Elwha river, creating their livelihood and traditions in tune with the river and drawing from its sustenance since time immemorial.
It is they who have always advocated for the health of the Elwha River and it is their reverence for the land that has carried this river restoration forward. We hold deep respect for their enduring care and willingness to collaborate for the betterment of all creatures and humans.

The Port Angeles Fine Arts Center is proud to be a part of the Second Saturday Art Walk! Enjoy a special extended evening to see the Beauty and Resilience exhibition in the gallery, then relax in our cozy courtyard- complete with light bites and drinks available for purchase. Bring friends or a date to gather around a fire table and share your own stories about the Elwha! Free and open to the public.
Celebrate the “Beauty and Resilience” exhibit with a special Second Saturday evening. Starting at 3PM, the Native Poets Group will have a live poetry reading in the courtyard. Following the reading, featured artist Darrell Charles will share about his carving skills and background before giving a live demonstration. Free and open to the public.
Join us for this exciting two day workshop that will introduce you to the world of underwater photography led by “Beauty and Resilience” artist John McMillan. Day 1 will take place at the PAFAC gallery and introduce participants to technical, equipment, and logistical instructions. Day 2 will be at the Elwha River where participants can apply the lessons in the field. This workshop has more safety, gear and ability requirements than most of our workshops- learn more here.
Join professional photographer and “Beauty and Resilience” artist, John Gussman on a photo adventure into the Elwha Valley. During this professionally guided, fine art photography workshop; you will explore the art of seeing and John will work with you to capture the vision you’re seeking to create. After the workshop, students can submit their top images to John who will then upload them to a shared site for all students to view.
